Who We Are
The
SCFH is a 501(c)(3) non-profit established to protect and promote the Fountain Hills McDowell Mountain Preserve, Fountain Hills Desert Botanical Garden and Lake Overlook Trail for the benefit of the community. It is a volunteer led organization and has no paid staff. SCFH's work is supported by contributions received from the public.


The primary objectives of the Conservancy are to:

  • support the Town's operational and maintenance priorities
  • provide recreational opportunities to enjoy these natural assets
  • provide educational opportunities to promote the value of these natural assets
  • advocate and take appropriate action to minimize any impact to the Town's natural resources

Easy Pace at Sunrise - Short Sonoran Loop
Are you an early bird looking for an early morning hike that isn't too far, too fast, or too hard? A Steward will lead you down the Sonoran Trail, to the first crossover, to the Lower Sonoran for a 3.3-mile loop. Bring 2 liters of water. No dogs please

Ridgeline - Plant & Flower Discovery Hike

Join us for a slower pace discovery hike of the Ridgeline trail in the Preserve. This loop hike is 4 miles and moderately difficult. Along the way we will be stopping to identify plants and flowers of the Desert. Bring 2 liters of water. No Dogs Please.

Sunrise Trailhead to Adero Canyon Trailhead

This one-way 5 mile hike has CONSIDERABLE elevation gain up the Sunrise Trail and then down to the Adero Canyon Trailhead. We will meet at the Adero Canyon Trailhead and carpool for a shuttle to the Sunrise Trailhead. Bring 2 liters of water. No dogs.
Birds - Sighting and Identification

During this walk in the Desert Botanical Garden with birder Peter Herstein you will be searching for birds, not only by sight but by sound. Peter will also demonstrate the use of the ebird, Merlin and birdNET apps. Bring water, and binoculars. No dogs.

Goldfield's Loop

This beautiful 8-mile hike will explore the horse trails in the Goldfields. The hike starts off challenging with most its elevation gain. Some areas will be steep and slippery. We will then descend into a wash and have Lunch. Bring 3 liters of water.
